The Shore Swim Program was developed to offer a progression based approach to swim lessons and lead into lifesaving. Skills are broken down into more achievable steps, and swimmers will focus on perfecting select skills before moving to the next level. We offer 60 and 75 minute lesson options, with a maximum of two swimmers in a class. Families can register for one lesson or several lesson sets at a time.
The Shore Starfish program is designed for swimmers between the ages of 2 - 6 yrs. In Starfish 1 - 4, swimmers work towards floating, gliding, and kicking independently. Basic front and back crawl is introduced in Starfish 5 - 7, with progressions designed for our little fishes. Self rescue skills from rollover floats to treading are included in all Starfish levels.
Starfish 1 is for toddlers and children who are attending swim lessons for the first time. Swimmers will learn how to float, rollover, and glide with help from their instructor.
In Starfish 2, swimmers will work on floating independently as well as rolling over, gliding, and kicking with assistance.
In Starfish 3, swimmers will learn how to rollover and glide on their front and back without assistance. Starfish 3 is equivalent to Sea Turtle 1.
In Starfish 4, swimmers will focus on kicking independently and work on rollover glides. Swimmers will advance their self rescue skills as they learn to jump into the pool, swim to the wall, and climb out.
In Starfish 5, swimmers will work on their rollover glides for 15 meters and are introduced to arm movements for front crawl. Swimmers will also learn how to tread water with assistance. Starfish 5 is equivalent to Sea Turtle 2.
In Starfish 6, swimmers will work on side kicking and progressions for basic front and back crawl with assistance. Swimmers will practice treading water independently.
In Starfish 7, swimmers will enhance their basic front and back crawl with the use of equipment, and work on treading water for 30 seconds. Starfish 7 is equivalent to Sea Turtle 3. After completing this level, swimmers can move on to Sea Turtle 4.
The Shore Sea Turtle program is for swimmers between the ages of 6 - 12 yrs. The 10 level Sea Turtle program focuses on swimming independently, perfecting stroke techniques, and endurance. Swimmers will seamlessly transition from kicking and rollover glides to swim strokes. By the end of the Sea Turtle program, swimmers will master front crawl, back crawl, breaststroke, and eggbeater.
Sea Turtle 1 is for children 7 and up who would like to improve their comfort in the water. Swimmers will learn how to float and glide independently and kick with assistance.
The goal of Sea Turtle 2 is to work on rollover glides independently and basic front crawl progressions.
In Sea Turtle 3, swimmers will build on progression from Sea Turtle 2, and work towards basic front and back crawl with the use of equipment. Treading water is introduced.
In Sea Turtle 4, swimmers will work on front crawl with unilateral breathing and back crawl for 25 meters each. Swimmers will be required to tread water for 60 seconds.
In Sea Turtle 5, swimmers will continue working on their front crawl and back crawl stroke technique as well as treading water for 90 seconds.
In Sea Turtle 6, swimmers will need to swim 50 meters of front crawl with unilateral breathing and back crawl, while maintaining good stroke technique. Whip kick is introduced on this level.
In Sea Turtle 7, front crawl with bilateral breathing and eggbeater is introduced. The distance swim requirement is 75 meters of both front and back crawl, with effective technique.
In Sea Turtle 8, swimmers will work on advanced back crawl and are introduced to breaststroke. Swimmers are required to tread water with eggbeater kick for 60 seconds.
In Sea Turtle 9, swimmers will enhance their front crawl with bent arms and an underwater pull. Breaststroke is further developed, with a 25 meter distance requirement. Swimmers will learn how to dive in this level. Treading water with eggbeater kick is required for 120 seconds.
In Sea Turtle 10, swimmers will perfect all three swim strokes - advanced front crawl, back crawl, and breaststroke, as well as diving and eggbeater. Swimmers are required to maintain flawless stroke techniques during the 300 meter distance swim. After completing Sea Turtle 10, swimmers can move onto the Sunfish program
The Shore Sunfish program is the transition from swimming to lifesaving lessons. The 2 level program prepares swimmers for fitness items in the Lifesaving Society Bronze Medal awards. Swimmers who have completed Sea Turtle 10 will maximize their speed and endurance during time swims, while maintaining stroke technique. Swimmers will also work on head up strokes, lifesaving kicks, and surface dives.
The goal of Sunfish 11 is to introduce swimmers to lifesaving fitness. Swimmers will work towards an endurance challenge of Swimming 400 M in 13 minutes or less. Head up front crawl and breaststroke is introduced, with a distance requirement of 25 meters. Lifesaving kicks are developed and swimmers will work on surface dives and stride entries.
Sunfish 12 challenges future lifesavers to swim 400 meters in 12 minutes or less, preparing swimmers for success in Bronze endurance challenges. The distance for head up front crawl and breaststroke increases to 50 meters in this level. Swimmers will put their lifesaving kicks to the test when practicing towing. After completing Sunfish 12, swimmers can move on to Bronze Medallion.
