Most drownings and water-related injuries occur in unsupervised settings such as backyard pools. Drowning is silent, can happen in less than 30 seconds, and is the leading cause of death for children under the age of five. Drowning is preventable; one step you can take to become water smart is ensuring you swim in areas supervised by lifeguards. Less than 1% of drownings occur in lifeguard supervised settings.
Additional layers of protection include restricting pool access during non swim times, the use of alarms, as well as wearing life jackets rather than puddle jumpers. Parents and guardians should stay within arms reach of children in the water; children and adults should learn water safety and drowning resuscitation skills.
